Since coming onto the downtown Bellevue scene in 2012, Bake’s Place is a bistro, bar & entertainment dimension that remains unique. Bake’s appeals to Bellevue residents, people working nearby and guests from the entire region. Regulars enjoy eclectic food, craft cocktails and varied weekend music performances along with the heartfelt hospitality of owners, Craig and Laura Baker and their staff.

“It has been exciting and challenging, explains Craig Baker, Bellevue is continuing its downtown growth boom, four new apartment complexes and a hotel are in various stages of completion within three blocks of our location in SOMA (South of Mall), our operational model has evolved based on neighborhood demand. Originally we offered live entertainment seven days a week, almost two years later we still offer live musical entertainment of all types on Saturday and Sunday, but we now feature live music to enhance dining and foster conversation Tuesday through Friday. Our new gigantic 23’ by 14’ HD screen allows us to feature sports or host events like our upcoming red carpet 2014 Oscar Viewing Party in a setting that is sometimes better than being there in person.”

For the last 15 years, Bake’s Place has been well known for its outstanding music programing winning many accolades and awards, it has now gained a reputation as one of the Eastside‘s favorite places to eat and drink.

Crafty Kitschy Yummy Cocktails to Warm you this Season at Pink Door

The Pink Door recently began serving hearts of celery (the nice tender part) along with our house infused extra virgin olive oil to guests as a nice complimentary welcome/treat when they first sit down to dine.

That has left us with other parts of the celery stalk which the chef did not want to waste. Therefore, we decided to create a delicious cocktail with the FRESH JUICE but were not sure just how to name it. One of our guests overheard us as we were brainstorming at the bar and asked about the ingredients (gin/lime juice/celery juice/mint/cherry bitters/and a beautiful decadent Luxardo Italian cherry as the garnish.)

He simply said, "The Celery Made Me Do It" and the drink name was born.

Here is a list of the new cocktails:

Founded in 1992, FareStart provides a community that transforms lives by empowering homeless and disadvantaged men, women, and families to achieve self-sufficiency through life skills, job training and employment in the food service industry. Students enrolled in FareStart’s Adult Culinary program receive not only hands-on culinary training in FareStart’s kitchens, but life-skills classes, counseling, and assistance with housing, food, clothing and other support services to assist them as they change their lives.

Since its inception, FareStart has become a beloved Seattle institution with talented chefs from the area's best restaurants donating their precious time, expertise, and ingredients to help train FareStart students. Each week, FareStart’s Guest Chef Nighthighlights this important partnership as a generous local chef donates their time to work alongside FareStart students to prepare a delicious three-course pre-fixe dinner for the public at the FareStart Restaurant in downtown Seattle. Since 1994, Guest Chef Night has helped raise more than $5 million—all of which has directly supported FareStart’s training programs.

Thanks to this incredible support from this industry and the entire community, FareStart has celebrated the graduation of 1,500 students since 1992—including 170 graduates in 2013 alone. Most importantly, FareStart graduates are getting and keeping jobs. In 2013, 90% of FareStart’s adult graduates secured employment within 90 days of graduation and six months later, 88% of those individuals were still in their jobs.

Bastille is excited to announce the 2014 dates for their popular rooftop dinners. There will be eight Monday evening dinners this summer between June and September, each starting with a rooftop garden tour and winding through a multi-course, shared seasonal meal with wine pairings.

Dinner begins at 6:30pm, but interested guests can arrive at 5:30pm for a rooftop garden tour with Colin McCrate and Brad Halm of Seattle Urban Farm Company. The tour begins in the bar with a Pimms Cup (Pimms No 1, lemon, cucumber, ginger, and seltzer) to enjoy while exploring the garden.

Dinner is held under a cabana with curtains that can be left open or closed, as weather dictates. The family-style meals will showcase the rooftop produce as well as other seasonal items, and chef Jason Stoneburner and/or chef de cuisine, Cody Farrell, will be on hand to talk about each dish. Sommelier, Kristen Young, will also be on hand to talk about the wines she selected to accompany the food.

Here is a menu from last summer:

Curry Plant Riata
tomatoes, cucumber, green beans, radish
2011 Hiedler Riesling ‘Urgenstein’, Kamptal, Austria

Frilly Mustard Greens
parmesan panna cotta, delicata squash, quince vinaigrette

The beautiful views of the faraway Olympic Mountains and the much closer historic buildings of Ballard make for a wonderful backdrop for the communal dinners. Opened in June of 2009 and housed in an historic 1920’s building in Seattle’s Old Ballard neighborhood, Bastille Café & Bar is a bustling homage to a Parisian brasserie. Owners Deming Maclise and James Weimann scoured Paris flea markets and local salvage stores for vintage accessories to create a truly authentic feel. From the white subway tiles, antique mirrors, and Paris Metro clock to the zinc-topped bar and stunning crystal chandelier that takes center stage in the Back Bar; they’ve truly hit the mark. Chef Jason Stoneburner creates French focused cuisine inspired by the abundance of seasonal product found locally---and it doesn’t get any more local than the restaurants 4500-square-foot organic rooftop garden. The wine list is French focused with a smattering of NW wines and the bar offers an extensive collection of absinthe. Bastille is open 4:30pm to 12am Sunday through Wednesday and until 2am Thursday through Saturday. Dinner is served from 5:30pm to 10pm Sunday thru Thursday and until 11pm on Fridayand Saturday. Lake Serene and Bridal Veil Falls Hike - 7.2 Miles

Lake Serene and Bridal Veil Falls are in my top 10 must hikes in the Northwest. It's 7.2 miles roundtrip with 23 switchbacks, strong elevation gains and a picturesque view as you get to the top of the mountain. The trail beings quietly through a groomed trail and slowly increases elevation as you head closer to Lake Serene. After about 2-3 miles in, you'll come to a fork where you can either hike up to Bridal Veil Falls or continue towards Lake Serene. I highly recommend hiking up to the falls and cooling off by the mist coming off of the waterfall.

Tip: Make sure to bring you Northwest Forest Pass. If you don't have, you can visit a local shack located just up the street and you can get a day pass for $5.

Location: Lake Serene (#1068) Central Cascades, Stevens Pass
West Mount Baker Snoqualmie, N 47° 47.0520, W 121° 34.3320

Roundtrip: 7.2 miles
Elevation Gain: 2000 ft
Highest Point: 2521 ft
Features: Lakes, Waterfalls, Wildflowers/Meadows, Mountain views

Required Permit: Northwest Forest Pass

Driving Directions:
From Everett, follow US 2 east to the hamlet of Gold Bar. Continue on US 2 for 7 more miles to just before it crosses the Skykomish River (near milepost 35), and turn right onto Mount Index Road. Proceed on this dirt road 0.4 mile, turning right on the spur road signed "Lake Serene Trail 1068." The trailhead and large parking area are 500 feet farther (elev. 600 ft.). Privy available.

Sosh, Helps You Discover Fun Things To Do in Your City

Last week, SOSH hosted a private "Campfire Social" full of cocktails served by none other than Canon and food by Skillet at a secret location which was later discovered to be at Melrose Market Studios in Capitol Hill.  The night ended with an amazing live performance by Allen Stone.

So... what is Sosh?

Sosh is a mobile app that uses a mix of technology and human curation to unearth, structure, and recommend the most amazing local events and activities. Acting as a personalized concierge, Sosh tailors recommendations to each member's unique interests and habits, as well as a host of other factors, including the weather outside, the time of day, a user's location, and more.

Sosh is currently available in San Francisco, New York City, and as of last month: Seattle... coming soon (Chicago, Boston, LA).

What sets Sosh apart is that it doesn’t simply give its members a directory of local venues. Instead, it curates the city’s best events and activities, from a pasta-making class with a famous chef to cocktails at a new speakeasy, a night hike up Mount Si, or the perfect itinerary for a first date.

Sosh was founded by former Google employees and has raised a total of $15 million from Instagram co-founder, Mike Krieger, Sequoia Capital, Khosla Ventures, and other notable investors. Sosh has previously launched its service in San Francisco and New York City, where its popularity has grown rapidly. In San Francisco, for example, nearly one out of every 6 adults is a Sosh member.

Seattle Waterfront Gondola Proposed (NEW)

Photo: VIA Architecture, A sketch of the proposed Union Street Gondola.

This sounds like a far fetched idea, but private investors are optimistic. Great Western Pacific, the owner of Pier 57 and the Seattle Great Wheel has proposed to build a gondola from the waterfront to the Convention Center along Union Street. The total route would be half a mile long with stop in the middle near Benaroya Hall and the Seattle Art Museum.

Matthew Roewe, of Via Architecture, said the demolition of the viaduct will take out about 1,200 waterfront parking spaces. But the Convention Center has 1,200 parking spots that are underused, particularly on weekends, he added. Thus, the gondola.

Trip time: Half-mile trip in five minutes.
Capacity: Hold eight passengers leaving every 16 seconds. That adds up to 1,800 passengers an hour -- the equivalent of 50 full Metro buses -- with no carbon emissions.
Construction: Eight columns about 70 feet tall would support the cable and gondola cars, which would travel 40 to 50 feet above the ground -- over top of electric trolley wires.
Cost: Around $5 per trip

The backers hope to have the gondola up and running within "a matter of weeks" after demolition of the viaduct, currently scheduled for 2016, Griffith said.

Do you think this will actually happen? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

Snout & Co. Food Truck Provides Plenty of Cuban Flavored Bang for Your Buck

        By Dorothy Malcolm

As one of the few trucks that rotate in the Bellevue Barnes & Noble parking lot each week, Snout & Co. is a regular on Mondays. The Cuban-Southern truck provides a mouth-watering menu that features staples of pork, black beans, plantains & rice. Their spicy sauce additions include tomatillo-coconut, habanero honey, and ancho-ginger.

You’re sure to spot the shiny black truck from a distance, its bright red decal of a pig snout and knives crossed to resemble a skull and crossbones can’t be missed. Testing out their selection for an early lunch, we tried the Homemade Black Bean Burger ($8) and Cuban Bread Pudding ($4), a mix of rum, plantains, and fresh whipped cream.

The bean burger is a handmade combination of beets, water chestnuts, quinoa & black beans, cooked to form a delightfully crispy exterior and a creamy, spicy interior. It’s paired with fresh arugula, onion relish, and melted Havarti on a wheat bun.

The Cuban bread pudding is a refreshingly savory take on normally sickly-sweet and rich bread puddings. The sweeter custard bread pairs well with the gently cooked savory plantains and the dollop of whipped cream is light and fresh, though the inclusion of rum as stated on the menu was considerably lacking in taste.

Other options include the Seattle Cuban, a pressed sandwich with mojo pork, red onion relish and chimichurri mango sauce or the Cuban Bowl, with mojo pork, black beans, rice, plantains and smoked tomatillo-coconut sauce. This comes in a veggie option as well, replacing the pork with collard greens. Simple sides such as beans & rice, plantains in tomatillo-coconut sauce, and veggie or carne style collard greens can be ordered as well.

If you’re driving, the truck does validate parking, and to beat the line it’s best to get there before 12:30.

Snout & Co. can found in the Bellevue Barnes & Noble parking lot on 106th Ave NE on Mondays from 11-2. Follow them on Facebook or Twitter @SnoutandCo and check out their website on where to find them in Seattle the rest of the week!

A Romantic Getaway, Off Season in Friday Harbor

By Rathchovy Ran & Charles Koh

Friday Harbor is an island retreat — especially during the months outside of summer. Less crowds. Less people. Less noise. It’s easy to forget the stresses of work and life as you cozy up to a fireplace and take a moment just to breathe. It’s your time to relax, unwind, and discover new adventures.

While visiting in the off season, It’s also important for you to bring a rain jacket and boots. We experience sun, clouds, and rain all in the same day. But despite what the weather may be, the landscape will always be picturesque — rain or shine.

On our weekend getaway, we stayed at Lakedale Resort. It was a beautiful property with over 80 acres and three lakes. Continental breakfast and omelets were especially prepared for hotel guests in the morning by the delightful MaryAnn who made you feel right at home. The resort offers a hotel, log cabins, a lake house, and camping. However, the campsites weren’t operating at the time. But will open soon...

Here’s a great concept! Camping in one of these canvas tents! This is called glamping. The resort provides everything in the tent in addition to breakfast and dinner!

After checking out the beautiful campground, went on a 2.5 hour boat adventure with Captain Hobbes Buchanan with San Juan Whales and Wildlife in search of whales. Although we didn’t find any whales that day, we did happen to see huge sea lions, eagles soaring in the air, and Mouflon sheep from Corsica on Spieden Island.

By this time, it started to sprinkle as we drove towards Roche Harbor on to our next adventure, the Westcott Bay Cider/San Juan Island Distillery, which was about 25 minutes away from the ferry terminal. By the time we made it to the distillery it was pouring down rain. The cider tasting was indoors and the gin tasting was under a shed so the rain didn’t bother us at all.

We started off with 3 types of hard cider, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed. Then we went on to the gin selection. I’m not a fan of gin, but I decided to give it a shot. It think we ended up trying four different types of gin, and we finished it off with a delicious lavender and wild rose liqueur. There were other types of liquor like brandy and vodka displayed for sale, which you could try first before buying. The tasting was free and of course we couldn’t resist but to buy a bottle or two or three...

For dinner we went to Coho Restaurant. I was glad that the rain had stopped. The meal was absolutely divine. Bold flavors, fresh ingredients and immaculate presentation skills. A restaurant worth ferrying over for.

RockCreek Seafood & Spirits, A Brunch Worth Catching

RockCreek, a chef Eric Donnelly creation has now been open for 5 months. Located in Fremont, guests can get a glimpse of Donnelly's favorite Montana fly fishing hole without the rods, reels and waders. As you walk in, you'll be invited with a life-size canvas of the Montana rivers making you feel like you're there.

Upstairs you'll find additional seating in a mid-century, cabin like mezzanine with blue-tined bark-beetle pine that was carefully selected from a hometown friend where you can see the detailed stains from crushed beetles. Head to the back of the room and you'll find a large handled sliding door to a private dining room where guests can rent for private parties and meetings.

Eric Donnelly is no stranger to the Seattle food scene who once led the New Orleans-inspired restaurant Toulouse Petit for the past four years.

His new restaurant, RockCreek focuses on simple ingredients and locally sustained produce which stemmed from a a midlife crisis driving to the mountains to a fishing hole in Rock Creek!

Then popped the idea of "should I give up cooking to go fly fishing?" He then decided that he was able to do both.

Bird's eye view from the top of the upstairs area.

Fresh, fresh, fresh! The fruits are full of flavor. They are sweet, citrusy and juicy. This is the Citrus with roasted marcona almonds, ricotta and mint. The tangy fruits complement very nicely with the mellow flavors of the ricotta and the crunch of the hazelnuts.

The Caramelized Apple Ricotta Beignets (ben-YAY) will make your eyes make laps inside your eye lids. We can thank the French for making such a delicious treat. The Beignet at RockCreek is doused in a powdered sugar, and lay in a vanilla bean anglaise and carmel sauce... make sure to order these even if you're full, it's worth it.

The Bacon and Oyster Benedict is a MUST ORDER for anyone visiting RockCreek. The brioche bread (but more like a pastry) is absolutely heavenly. It's sweet in flavor, soft in the middle, with a crispy, flaky texture outer layer that melts in your mouth. The combination of the perfectly cooked yolk dripping eggs, smokey bacon and the deep fried oyster in a layer of Old Bay lemon hollandaise sauce is an party in your mouth.

House made biscuit in a creamy gravy made with brown sugar, sage and sausage. The biscuit is buttery, moist and goes nicely with the scrambled eggs.

Here's a look at the beautiful bar.
