Vital Farms’ Pasture-Raised Alfresco Eggs Bring Great-Tasting and Humanely-Raised Eggs to the Pacific Northwest

The brand new line of pasture-raised and Certified Humane® Alfresco Eggs by Vital Farms is now available in more than 200 Quality Food Centers (QFC) and Fred Meyer stores within the greater Puget Sound and Portland metro markets. The introduction of Alfresco Eggs marks the first time pasture-raised, premium eggs will be available in mass market grocery locations in the Pacific Northwest making high-quality and ethically-raised eggs readily available to anyone, not just those who shop at specialty grocery stores.

“As consumers continue to demand accessible high-quality, ethically raised foods, ’pasture-raised’ is the fastest growing segment within the specialty egg set,” said Matt O'Hayer, Owner of Vital Farms. “Our pasture-raised hens, or ‘girls’ as we call them, are healthy and happy; resulting in a humanely-raised egg that is better tasting and more nutritious.”

Alfresco Eggs are the first of their kind to earn the third-party Certified Humane label, which means each hen has at least 108 square feet of pasture where they are free to roam and forage outside all year round. To ensure fresh nutrition for the hens, the pastures are rotated weekly and no pesticides, herbicides or other chemicals are ever introduced to the chickens, their eggs or their pastures. The pasture-raised Alfresco Eggs have less cholesterol and saturated fat, and more vitamins and omega 3s than factory farm eggs making for a more nutritious, rich and delicious egg.

Pasture-raised farming is a superior method for ensuring both the quality of the eggs, and the humane and ethical treatment of the hens. By comparison, “free-range” is often misleading to consumers; “free-range” means that while a hen has access to the outdoors, it is usually a very limited space (less than two square feet), and typically means she still spends most of her time in a crowded indoor space. “Cage-free” simply means that a hen is not caged; it is however, still kept indoors, often with little space to move around (less than one square foot) and no outdoor access.

Look for Alfresco Eggs’ colorful, chalk-drawing inspired cartons in the dairy or specialty/organic sections of QFC and Fred Meyer stores. Alfresco Eggs are available in 12-packs and retail at a competitive price point to other specialty eggs. In addition to Alfresco Eggs, Vital Farms offers other egg types that are also pasture-raised: USDA Certified Organic sold as Vital Farms in Whole Foods and as Pasture Verde in other retailers.

Tap House Grill Introduces Brand New Menu

Tap House Grill, with locations in Bellevue and downtown Seattle, has introduced an entirely revamped menu to accompany its extensive beer selection.

“As a restaurant, it is certainly our duty to keep current on the culinary trends; especially those that pair well with the focal point of our restaurants - beer,” said Paul Reder, owner of Tap House Grill. “Many of our dishes had been on the menu since we opened in 2002. While we had some guest favorites, we set a goal to impact every single menu item. Even the rare few that stayed on the menu received a tweak.”

The new menu was tested and refined over the summer and includes creations such as: Ahi Poke Tower with sesame seared ahi, avocado, tomato, tobiko, seaweed salad, crispy wontons, and wasabi aioli; Bacon Wrapped Jalapeños stuffed with cream cheese; Cedar Planked Wild Bulgogi Marinated Salmon with orange-miso butter, crispy rice cake, and veggies; Morning After Burger with a signature blended burger patty with beef and bacon ground together, topped with molasses-smoked black pepper bacon, gruyere cheese, slow roasted cipollini onions, and a fried egg with chipotle aioli; and Bacon and Grilled Pineapple Flatbread with molasses-smoked black pepper bacon, sweet habanero barbeque sauce, cotija and fresh mozzarella, cilantro, chilies, and caramelized red onion.

Additionally, ingredients and textures were added to enhance the flavor profile of existing favorites, which include: Sweet and Spicy Chicken Wings with general Tso’s sauce, Chinese hot mustard, cucumbers, siracha, green onion, and peanuts; Spice Crusted Ahi Salad with rice vermicelli, wild greens, cucumber, tomato, carrots, red radish, sweet peppers, peanuts, and Thai basil dressing ;Chimichurri Grilled Alaskan Cod Tacos with avocado crème, tomato, slaw, salsa fresca, and cilantro; and Italian Mac and Cheese with Italian five cheese Alfredo, roasted peppers, fried salami, onions, tomatoes, roasted garlic, and fresh basil.

“All of the new items have received positive feedback from our guests and has instilled a sense of excitement to our menu,” added Reder. “This is certainly a better reflection of what Tap House Grill represents and creates great options for individuals, groups or parties.”

Tap House Grill features the largest selection of draft beers in the Northwest with more than 160 on tap. The restaurant offers lunch, dinner, happy hour, late night dining, full service catering, and private dining and banquet space. Groups of less than 30 people can dine in the restaurant without booking a private space. While larger groups, up to 680, can take advantage of a choice of private room options which include billiards, live music areas, and audio visual capabilities.

About Tap House Grill

The Tap House Grill offers two distinct restaurants. The original restaurant, the Bellevue Tap House Grill, has been open since 2002. The Bellevue Tap House Grill features the largest selection of Northwest beers on tap on the Eastside, and is located in the Bellevue Galleria. The Seattle Tap House Grill restaurant is located in downtown Seattle with access to all the shopping, attractions, and convention facilities in Seattle. Tap House Grill Seattle also offers a billiards room with regulation size tables at hourly rates. Both of the Tap House Grill restaurant locations feature an extensive beer collection, over 160 beers on tap, as well as Northwest influenced cuisine. For more information, visit taphousegrill.com.

Seattle Restaurant Week is Coming in October

Beginning Oct. 19, Seattle area restaurants will come together to present the broadest reaching, largest dining celebration in the area: Seattle Restaurant Week. The 10-day program runs Oct.19-23 and Oct. 26-30 (Sunday-Thursday), offering three-course dinners for $30 and two-course lunches for $15.

Seattle Restaurant Week was created by Seattle and Eastside restaurants banding together to offer diners a price-conscious menu at some of the areas most respected dining establishments. Largely based on the success of other Restaurant Weeks across the country, the promotion offers value-driven menus from restaurants big and small throughout Seattle and surrounding communities.

“October is the perfect time to take advantage of dining somewhere new during Seattle Restaurant Week, or just getting an incredible deal at one of your favorite spots; fall is setting in and we naturally seek out comfort of great cooking during this season, especially with the bounty of the fall harvest”, says Chef-Owner Maria Hines of Maria Hines Restaurants. “This two-week celebration of food is also a way for us, the local restaurants, to thank diners for their ongoing support of this great promotion.”

New to the program this fall are restaurants such as Vespolina, Bell + Whete, Chiso Sushi, Szmanias, Place Pigalle and others.

A modest price increase in the Oct. program accounts for rising ingredient costs, but allows participating restaurants to produce high quality dishes that compromise nothing in portion size and creativity. Far from just date night dining, many restaurants offer kids menus that make Seattle Restaurant Week a family occasion. A list of participating restaurants and individual restaurant menus are available now at www.SeattleRestaurantWeek.com. More restaurants are added weekly.

About Seattle Restaurant Week

Celebrated for 10 days every April and October, Seattle Restaurant Week offers fixed-price, multi-course lunches and dinners at restaurants throughout King County. Seattle Restaurant Week partners with The Seattle Times and Alaska Airlines VISA Signature for the broadest reaching dining promotion in the Puget Sound area. Seattle Restaurant Week is operated by the Seattle Restaurant Cooperative, a non-profit association of restaurateurs united to represent local area restaurants. Seattle Restaurant Cooperative board members include restaurateurs from John Howie Restaurants, Maria Hines Restaurants, Nell’s Restaurant, Thierry Rautureau Restaurants and Tom Douglas Restaurants. For more information, visit www.SeattleRestaurantWeek.com. Diners can visit Twitter (@SeattleRW) and Facebook (Facebook.com/SeattleRestaurantWeek) for news and giveaways.

Hot Cakes to Open Second Location in Capitol Hill in 2015

Autumn Martin, owner and chocolatier of Ballard’s beloved Hot Cakes Molten Chocolate Cakery, is thrilled to announce her second location. The new Hot Cakes will be located in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood at 1650 East Olive Way, on the ground level of a new building where the iconic dessert cafe B&O Espresso stood for 36 years. Martin is shooting for an opening in the first quarter of 2015.

The 2,200 square-feet of space means more seating and an expanded retail area, plus a larger variety of milkshakes and cocktails! Hot Cakes will be making their very own ice cream in the new kitchen, both hard-pack and soft-serve. (There are plans for smoked chocolate ice cream!) Martin is thrilled about the new space, and plans to create a more hands-on, immersive dessert experience in the Capitol Hill shop.

There will be 50 seats inside and 25 outside on a covered patio. The patio will offer year-round seating, complete with a fire pit for roasting marshmallows! S’mores can happen inside too, with mini hibachi grills and complete s’mores kits available for gooey roasting enjoyment indoors.

The dining and retail space will be about double of that of the Ballard shop—there’ll even be a photo booth! A mezzanine over the kitchen will provide private event space for 24—and what goes together better than celebrations and molten cakes?

Hot Cakes will continue to serve award-winning Blue Star Coffee from the Methow Valley, and the savory and pastry menu will be very similar to the Ballard shop’s offerings. The Ballard kitchen will remain the main production kitchen, though cakes for the Capitol Hill shop will be whipped up onsite, as well as all the ice cream.

Martin is so excited to bring her handmade organic treats to Capitol Hill, and looks forward to opening the doors!

Opened in May of 2012 by Autumn Martin, Hot Cakes Molten Chocolate Cakery is a fun and unique dessert restaurant and brand of high quality, organic desserts. While the molten chocolate cakes have earned Martin a devoted following, Hot Cakes offers many other swoon-inducing desserts such as: milkshakes (boozy and otherwise,) to-die-for cookies, bread pudding, and tarts, as well as savory bites and cocktails. The restaurant also features a production kitchen and a retail shop that showcases the innovative confections, caramel sauces, and take-and-bake molten chocolate cakes that keep guests coming back. Hot Cakes’ mission is to inspire and please – one delicious, creative, and organic dessert at a time.

Hot Cakes is open Monday through Friday from 11am to 11pm and until 12am on Friday. Saturdays the shop is open from 10am to 12am and Sundays 10am to 11pm. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 3pm to 6pm. For more information, call 206.420.3431. To learn more or order Hot Cakes products online, visit www.getyourhotcakes.com.

The build-out of Ericka Burke’s Portage Bay market is coming right along! She’s had a great time picking out design elements and watching as the space begins to come together, and it looks like Canal Market will open mid-November.

At the center of the market will be a large deli island with ready-made salads, cheeses, and charcuterie as well as made-to-order sandwiches and salads. The morning hours will offer a breakfast buffet with toast and house-made toppings, fresh fruit, granola, and more. The juice and espresso bar, serving fresh pressed juices and Slate Coffee, will be open all day.

The market will offer organic produce, farm fresh eggs, a selection of dry goods, and thoughtfully curated gift and specialty food items. For the kids: the cooler will hold all of Burke’s favorite artisan ice creams and there’ll be old-school candy available by the pound. And for the adults: there will be a handpicked selection of bottled wine and beer!

The baked goods Volunteer Park Cafe is known and loved for will be available at Canal Market too—there’ll even be some killer new cookie varieties. Tess Macdonald of July Floral will run a Garden & Flower area with bright, beautiful bouquets year-round.

The market will have seating along the windows to enjoy a coffee and a treat, and a communal table for lunch with friends. Burke is so excited to open the doors of the market, and can’t wait to meet the neighborhood.

Located at 2919 Fuhrman Avenue East in Seattle’s Portage Bay neighborhood, Canal Market will provide the neighborhood with groceries, fresh produce, household essentials, and specialty gift items, as well as grab-and-go food, and beer and wine. The market will be open daily from 7am to 7pm. For more information, visit www.canalmarketseattle.com

From the US: Lulu Yee , Derek Weisberg, Pandora Andre-Beatty and Michael Linton Simpson. The exhibit is sponsored by Icelandair Cargo and Iceland Naturally.

“I lived in Iceland for 4 years and am fascinated with the connection Icelanders have with nature, their colorful heritage, their folklore, hidden people, elves, the Norse Gods,” said Lulu Yee, artist and curator of Odin’s Eye. “Iceland is a nation of great storytellers, and I wanted to work on a group show which addresses an aspect of the Icelandic heritage, while at the same time, viewing it through the lens of a foreigner who has had little exposure to those stories."

36 Hours in Sedona, Arizona: Red Rocks, Safari, Spa, Hiking

Sedona, Arizona is a magical escape filled with soaring red rocks, luxury resorts, boutique wineries and countless outdoor adventures you can go on. USA Weekend recently named Sedona as the Most Beautiful Places in America. For this Weekend Getaway, we decided to leave Seattle behind for a few days and head over to the sunny state of Arizona.

If you're like us and miss the summer heat, Phoenix is the perfect destination to experience the 80 degree weather again. The flight time from Seatac Airport to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is approximately 3 hours. We like to pre-load a few movies on a tablet, power up the Bose headphones and time will fly in a jiffy.

One of our favorite times to travel is at night. The people are much quieter on the plane, you can sleep better and traffic is usually obsolete during this time. With a 7PM departure from Seattle, we arrived at the Phoenix Airport around 10PM. At this hour, we decided to spend a night at the Phoenix Airport Hotel at the Hilton located within 10 minutes from the airport.

The next morning, we made our drive to Sedona. A beautiful two hour drive through a geological wonderful filled with rolling hills, red rocks and cacti. The drive actually feels much shorter as the speed limit is 75 miles per hour for the most part.

Did you know: Sedona is surrounded by 1.8 million acres of national forest land, visitors have instant access to recreational activities. Trails for hiking and biking, along with bouncy jeep tracks, weave among the bristling forest of pinnacles, spires, buttes and domes. Yet, you’re never far from the indulgences of town.

    Out of Africa Wildlife Park

Experience an incredible wildlife adventure without having to go to Africa. Out of Africa Wildlife Park is an opportunity to see hundreds of wild-by-nature animals from all over the world, especially Africa. Not a zoo, not a drive-through park, it’s a place where visitors enjoy an authentic replica of a real African Bush Safari. Besides the entertaining shows and animal presentations throughout the day, all of our animals are cared for with passion and respect, roaming in spacious habitats that give you the chance to see these beautiful creatures and their natural behavior up-close.

Tip: Go during your Birthday Month and your admission will be FREE. Also, go early in the morning as it's less busy and you'll have more time to explore the whole park.

The wine menu is beautifully displayed on this iPad with bottles being easily searchable by grape varietals.
The Beef Tartare (hemp oil, quail egg yolk, garlic aioli, kettle chips) was absolutely incredible. The beef was tender, well seasoned, and complimented perfectly with the crunchy texture of the chips and the sweetness of the aioli.
The Harris Ranch beef tenderloin (local lobster mushrooms, butter mashed potatoes, garlic puree) was cooked to perfection. The tenderloin was well seasoned and cut through like butter. The butter mashed potatoes paired nicely with the saltiness of the wine glazed lobster mushrooms.
The Grilled Cobia (organic spinach, charred lemon, agave lacquer, clam emulsion) was perfectly cooked, moist and explosive on the palate.

    Cathedral Rock Trail

Cathedral Rock Tail is one of the most beautiful hikes in Sedona. The trail lies at the edge of a group of isolated red buttes on the south side of Sedona, about five miles from the main line of sandstone cliffs to the north, and together with Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock on the far side of AZ 179, is one of the most photographed formations in the area, due in part to the easy access from the highway. The Cathedral Rock Trail is only 0.7 miles in length, climbing quite steeply up an open slickrock slope "scramble" beneath the butte to a viewpoint at the base of the sheer cliffs at the center - on a saddle which links the peak to an adjacent flat-topped summit to the south. The path gains 600 feet in elevation so is a little more strenuous than its short distance might suggest, and fewer than half the people who start make it to the end, though the views just little way along are still very good, looking northwards towards Sedona and the colorful mountains beyond. One shorter target is a promontory known as Courthouse Butte Vista, reached after 0.3 miles.

Directions: about a mile (1.6 km) west of Arizona Route 179, and about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) south of the "Y" intersection of Routes 179 and 89A in uptown Sedona.

    Chapel of the Holy Cross

The chapel was inspired and commissioned by local rancher and sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude, who had been inspired in 1932 by the newly constructed Empire State Building to build such a church. After an attempt to do so in Europe, with the help of the noted architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, was aborted due to the outbreak of World War II, she decided to build the church in her native region.

    Dahl & Di Luca

Owners Dahl & Di Luca have created a masterpiece in Sedona. Cucina Rustica's cuisine is "Rustic Italian" using a traditional sautee method and grilled meats and seafood. Chef Lisa Dahl insists on absolute best ingredients for the mainstays of the menu and the nightly specials.

Cucina Rustica is fine dining with amazing comfort food such as Lisa's signature vegetarian or meat lasagna's or more traditional dishes like Veal Piccata sauteed in a sublime lemon caper sauce and an Eggplant Parmigiana that has turned non-eggplant lovers into this being their favorite dish.

Signature house specials include a Merchiaro with sea scallops, prawns and calamari sauteed with organic campari tomatoes, capers and fresh basil, served in a delicately spiced boullabaisse style sauce over orzo riso pasta.

The gathering included 26 producers pouring wines, beers, ciders and spirits. Also in attendance were the Puget Sound Food Hub, Farmstr, and Starlight Desserts.

I've made some great contacts and picked up a number of accounts, including one person who made a decision to carry our products at both of their locations within an hour of the event ending. We are now at the top of that client's menu in their best-selling cocktail."-Skip Tognetti, Letterpress Distilling

Seastar Restaurant in Seattle to Close in January 2015

Seastar’s Bellevue Location Will Remain Open

Chef John Howie regretfully announces that effective January 3, 2015, Seastar Restaurant & Raw Bar located in Seattle will close to the public. Chef Howie would like to thank loyal guests for their continued support of Seastar in Seattle, and also express gratitude to the restaurant’s dedicated staff. Seastar’s success could not be possible without either. The restaurant will remain open with regular dining at lunch and dinner until the closure, and Chef Howie hopes to see guests stop by and celebrate a remarkable five years in South Lake Union.

The John Howie Restaurant Group and Vulcan came to a mutual decision to end Seastar’s lease in January 2015 and close the restaurant in Seattle. Despite the growing population of the South Lake Union area, Chef Howie believes that Seastar’s concept is perhaps better suited in another location, and is currently searching for a new space. While it’s sad to leave friends and guests behind in Seattle, Chef Howie wants to allow everyone two months to plan accordingly and stop by to say hello one more time (or two!) before closing Seastar’s Seattle operations to focus efforts at the Bellevue location.

“I'm very proud of what we’ve accomplished at the Seattle Seastar location; we have amazing people who have given their all to make Seastar a Seattle classic,” commented Chef/Owner John Howie. “We look forward to serving our guests, whether it's over the next two months or sometime, somewhere in the future. Thank you Seattle!”

Chef Howie opened Seastar ’s Seattle location in the winter of 2009 to incredible accolades and reviews. Since opening, Seastar has received many awards, including Seattle Magazine Reader’s Choice Best Seafood Restaurant and Best Service, Washington Wine Restaurant Award’s Washington Wine Grand Award in 2009, Wine Spectator Magazine’s Best of Award of Excellence consecutively from 2009-2014, and Evening Magazine’s Best of Western Washington top five winner in 2012. Seastar in Seattle was also recognized with Zagat ratings of 27 for food, 25 for service, and 25 for décor.

Chef Howie looks forward to opening a new restaurant/brewery and distillery, Beardslee Public House and Wildwood Spirits Co., in Bothell in January 2015.

Holiday Pies can be ordered and picked up at Canal Market — Organic Pumpkin, Organic Apple, and Chocolate Pecan are all available for $32 each.

Burke is excited to host three wine tastings at the space, on three Tuesdays: November 25, December 9, and December 16. All of the tastings will be from 5pm – 7pm, and will showcase some of Burke’s favorite wines for the holiday table. They’ll all come from boutique wineries and from winemakers she admires, that are dedicated to taking care of the land as well as producing great wines.

Slate Coffee espresso drinks and cups of pour-over coffee will be available daily, as will a handful of great pastries from VPC—shopping fuel! Burke is excited to start getting to know her Portage Bay neighbors better, and welcomes all to come and do their holiday shopping at the pop-up. Additional local artisans will be featured throughout the pop-up, so stay tuned!

Located among the elegant homes of Seattle’s North Capitol Hill, Volunteer Park Cafe (VPC) is the quintessential neighborhood-meeting place. With mismatched vintage chairs, throw pillows tossed along banquets, and a communal table running the length of the inviting sunlit room - it’s the perfect place to spend time. The food is delicious home-style goodness, house made pastries, savory and sweet, and a selection of fresh salads, soups, and sandwiches provide daytime provisions ordered from friendly faces behind the counter. As the light dims and the candles are lit, table service begins and guests cozy in for rustic pizzas and ever-changing seasonal offerings like Braised Beef Brisket with Creamy Polenta and Greens, Pan Seared Halibut, or the heavenly Pot Pie. VPC offers a generous selection of boutique wines by the glass and bottles of wine can be enjoyed at the cafe or taken to go. VPC is open Tuesday – Friday from 7am – 4:30pm, weekends from 8am – 4:30pm, and dinner is served Tuesday – Saturday from 5:30pm – 9pm.
