The 5 Point Cafe Turns 85

Seattle —Next week local patrons will have another reason to raise a glass to the best working class bar in the business. Known for stirring up stories, getting people talking, and good no frills food and drinks- The 5 Point Cafe in Belltown turns 85 this week. In celebration, the bar that prides itself on “alcoholics serving alcoholics since 1929” will offer specials with old school prices all week long. The celebration will take place each day for the week of June 30- July 4th:

Monday, June 30th, (4pm -10 pm) - 25¢ Hamburgers
Tuesday, July 1st (4 pm-10 pm) - 10¢ Beers
Wednesday , July 2nd (6am - 10am)- 50¢ 2 Eggs, Hash Browns, Toast
Thursday, July 3rd (4pm-10pm) - $1 Whiskey Shots
Friday , July 4th (4pm -10 pm) - 35¢ Blue Plate Special

The 5 Point is located at 415 Cedar Street in Seattle. It’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is online at www.the5pointcafe.com.

History of The 5 Point Cafe

Preston Smith and his wife Frances met at Mannings Café on 4th Avenue in the 1920s. He worked his way into management, and she worked in the bakery, until both quit to start The 5 Point Cafe on July 1, 1929. At the end of Prohibition in the 1930s, Preston secured a beer license and business boomed- at one point he was selling 75 kegs of beer a day. “I made my first million selling ten-cent drinks of beer for a nickel,” recounts Smith. “Back then The 5 Point was where the ordinary man would eat a dime sandwich and drink a nickel cup of coffee.”

Surviving during the Depression Era wasn’t a “bowl of cherries.” Mr. Smith remembers the price of doing business- like when the local policeman came by and asked for a little kickback. "The Sergeant on the beat always wanted a $20 dollar bill when he shook hands with me,” he recounts.

In 1975, Preston’s son Dick Smith took over the family business. Dick kept Preston’s method of large portions for good prices going, but also made The 5 Point legendary by pulling off all sorts of stunts. He helped lead the successful political opposition to the Seattle Common and started the odd bumper sticker campaign against bicycles - giving out thousands of “Bicyclists and Freeloaders” stickers. He famously installed a periscope in the men’s room with a clear view of the Space Needle, which is now in almost every guidebook on Seattle. He rigged up a rooftop faucet to water the sidewalk and discourage the transients who loitered in front of The 5 Point.

From using $3,000 of his own money to build a somewhat illegal children’s park on a vacant lot at 3rd & Bell to hiring waitresses to wear bikinis and roller skates and plug expiring parking meters in the neighborhood, leaving a flyer on the windows letting them know they were saved a parking ticket courtesy of The 5 Point- Dick always kept people talking.

In 2009, Dave Meinert took over ownership and is doing his best to keep the press stunts coming- banning Google Glass and fighting the city much like Smith did for decades. He's also been able to turn The 5 Point back into the thriving business it was in the '90s while maintaining huge portions of value priced comfort food and stiff drinks in a relaxed atmosphere that will always hark back to real working class Seattle.

Orondo Ruby Makes its 2014 Debut in Seattle Markets

Orondo – The Orondo Ruby, a new Northwest cherry variety discovered by fourth generation fruit grower Marcus Griggs, is now available at select grocers throughout the country. This patented cherry variety is grown exclusively by G&C Farms, and has only been available since 2010 in very limited quantities. This year, ideal weather and tree maturity has resulted in a crop double the size of last year’s, increasing production from 30 thousand boxes to 60 thousand boxes.

“This time of year is always exciting for us, and the 2014 harvest will hopefully be one of our best thus far,” said Cory Wray, director of marketing and branding for the Orondo Ruby. “The Rubies have great color and are full of flavor - we’re excited to get them into our customers’ hands.”

The Orondo Ruby is characterized by its vibrant red appearance and a golden-yellow flesh, along with a perfectly crisp yet juicy bite. In 2010, the Orondo Ruby was introduced to a handful of customers and received much praise due to its combination of high sugar and acid levels, resulting in bigger flavor. A 28-day refrigerated storage test performed by the WSU Tree Fruit Research Center showed that the Orondo Ruby’s firm skin and higher acidity allows it to have a better shelf life than that of Bing and Rainier cherries.

The Orondo Ruby is sold and distributed by Chelan Fresh Marketing (www.chelanfresh.com) and is now available at QFC and Fred Meyer in the Pacific Northwest. Nationally, the Orondo Ruby will be available in various Kroger and Sam’s Club Stores. As the Orondo Ruby trees continue to grow, full production of the variety is projected to be reached in 2017 and yield 125 thousand boxes. Price varies by retailer.

About the Orondo Ruby

The Orondo Ruby was a chance seedling found by grower Marcus Griggs in 2001 in the middle of his Rainier cherry orchard. Griggs, a fourth generation fruit grower, owns the patent for the Orondo Ruby which features a scarlet red-blushed skin and golden yellow flesh and features juicy-sweet layers of flavor, balanced acidity and a crisp bite. Studies have shown this variety to have up to 20 percent more sugar and acid than Rainier cherries, resulting in bigger flavor. Distiller Erik Liedholm Passes British-based Institute of Brewing and Distilling

SEATTLE – Erik Liedholm, Distiller/Owner of Wildwood Spirits Co., received a “certificate in distilling” through the Institute of Brewing & Distilling this week. After one year of production, Liedholm will be an officially certified Master Distiller. Liedholm is scheduled to open Wildwood Spirits Co. with Chef John Howie in November 2014 in Bothell.

“By taking the educational route and focusing on the analytics of production, I believe it will help us as a company, as well as me personally, to learn about the nuances of the process,” commented Distiller/Owner, Erik Liedholm.

The Institute of Brewing & Distilling is the only organization certifying brewers and distillers across industry. The certification process required Liedholm to travel to the Institute of Brewing & Distilling’s head offices in London this past March. After three days of taking classes and passing two days of exams, Liedholm went on to take and pass his final exam locally in May, with results announced this week.

“I never had a doubt that Erik would pass his exam. Erik’s studies, efforts and passion for wine and spirits, along with his desire to be the best in what ever he does is most impressive!” commented Chef/Owner, John Howie. “Erik, congratulations, you've done it again!”

Distiller Erik Liedholm and Chef John Howie’s Wildwood Spirits Co. embraces a local philosophy, sourcing 90 percent of produce for distilling from Washington state. The first two spirits available are Kur gin and Stark Vatten vodka. Kur is made in the English dry gin style. It is produced with Washington heirloom variety red winter wheat that emphasizes a backbone of classic juniper aromas and flavors, with subtle citrus and surprise local ingredients. Stark Vatten is produced using Washington heirloom variety red winter wheat and pure, filtered water. It results in clean, viscous, oily vodka that displays a definitive classic European style.

Both Kur and Stark Vatten have already received numerous awards from the competitions they’ve been entered in; the American Distilling Institute’s Annual Judging of Craft American Spirits, American Association of Craft Distiller’s Awards, and the Seattle Gin Society’s Ginvitational. Toast America's Birthday with Red, White and Blue Booze

Happy Birthday, America! It’s time to celebrate the patriotic way: with some red, white and blue booze. As the grills are cooking and the sun is shining, complete this Fourth of July with delicious cocktails all of your guests will enjoy. Let the Independence Day drinking begin! We've put together a list of some of our favorite cocktails recipes.

Maestro Dobel Tequila
Lobster rolls are a summertime favorite and the best cocktail to enjoy it with is the Maestro Dobel Black Diamond Margarita. The sweetness from Dobel’s mix of reposado, añejo and extra añejo brings out the flavor in the delicious sandwich.

Black Diamond Margarita
2 oz Dobel
0.5 oz Fresh-squeezed Lime Juice
0.5 oz Agave nectar

Combine ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain over fresh ice into a rocks or margarita glass.

1800 Tequila
You can’t have a summer barbeque without grilled corn. Give this Fourth of July flair some flavor by adding some queso fresco (Mexican cheese), lime juice and cayenne pepper. When the flavor starts to kick in, enjoy a Blue Lagoon Margarita with 1800 Tequila – 100% blue agave tequila. Mexico is famous for their queso and tequila, so why not enjoy them together?

Blue Lagoon Margarita
1.5 oz 1800 Tequila
0.75 oz Blue Curacao
0.5 oz Pineapple Juice
Splash Lemon-Lime soda
Splash of Lime Juice

Combine ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain over fresh ice into a rocks or margarita glass.

Reyka Vodka
For the vegetarian at your party, grill up some vegetables. If the veggies happen to be farm fresh, then the best cocktail to sip on would be no other than the Reyka Punch. Since Reyka Vodka is made with glacial water and distilled through lava rocks, your meal will be all-natural!

Reyka Punchchrome
1 bottle Reyka Vodka
1.5 cups Watermelon Juice
1 cup Pineapple Juice
1 cup Lime Juice
5 Mint leaves

Combine ingredients in a punch bowl or pitcher with large ice and stir.

Sailor Jerry
Fourth of July is all about grilling and where there’s a grill, there are hamburgers. Lemonade is always a refreshing choice of drink to pair with burgers, but we recommend spiking it with Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum for a smooth, no-nonsense cocktail.

Backyard Lemonade
2 oz Sailor Jerry
4 oz Fresh Lemonade
Lime wedge

Combine ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain over fresh ice into a rocks glass.

Monkey Shoulder
Every July 4th party has one guest who makes the red, white and blue flag cake that is always super sweet. To take away the sweetness, enjoy a Monkey Shoulder Jam Sour and indulge.

Monkey Jam Sour
1.5 oz Monkey Shoulder
0.5 oz Sugar syrup
1 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
0.5 oz Soda Water
2 tsp Jam
Dash of Orange Bitters

Combine ingredients except the soda water in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain over fresh ice into a tall glass and top with soda water.

This sell-out event features Puget Sound oysters, Alaskan Dungeness crab, and other local seafood treasures. All proceeds benefit the Puget Sound Restoration Fund (PSRF), a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring the Sound’s water quality and native marine species and their habitats.

As the clouds and cool fall weather move into the Puget Sound region, the icy North Pacific Ocean region currents entice shellfish to come into their prime—developing a crisp, firm texture and clean taste characteristics. Elliott’s long-standing partnerships with responsible growers ensure that everything we serve comes from a sustainable local resource dedicated to the well-being of our environment. Join us as we celebrate the return of shellfish season.

Popular online news site theCHIVE has showed Seattleites some love with its first Chive Fest in Seattle (other cities include Chicago, Dallas, and Denver). The new music festival included local bites, KCCO (Keep Calm and Chive On) beers, oversized ostriches, Chivettes, and live performances by Girl Talk, Washed Out, Steel Panther, St. Lucia, The Birds of Satan, Surfer Blood, Moon Taxi, and Ghost Beach.

The festival started off slow, but by the end of the night heels, toes and hands were up in the air.

For those who missed the event this year, you will have to mark your calendar for 2015. CHIVE Fest is a community of fun spirited people who love to have fun, be themselves and enjoy life. What we enjoyed the most about the festival was the diversity of music, the beer, and how open people were to meet, mingle and share laughs. The event took place at Seattle's popular destination, Seattle Center. The festival consisted of two stages, food, and beers. Not to mention a beautiful 90 degree day.

Take a look at some of the highlights below.

We leave you with a BIG THANK YOU! Two more shows left, visit chivefest.com for more info. We have a ton of photos available, let us know if you want to see more!

Next shows: Denver: August 16th, Dallas: November 1st, 2014.

Lady Yum Debuts Artisan Macaron Shop in Downtown Kirkland

Shop features artisan macarons in imaginative flavors, wine bar, café and local specialty foods

Lady Yum, a new boutique shop dedicated to providing artisan French macarons, a large variety of wines, and delicious specialty foods, is officially opening its doors on July 18th, 2014 just steps from the Kirkland Marina, at 111 Lake Street.

Lady Yum pushes the limits of her imagination to create macarons you won’t find in traditional parlors. Flavors of the delectable, gluten free treats include Mango Habanero, Fennel Pear, Maple Bacon and Pineapple Upside Down Cake. You can also enjoy their best-selling classics such as Salted Caramel and Toasted Coconut.

In addition to these individual products, Lady Yum also offers catering for parties and events, pre-made gift baskets and a build-your-own-gift basket program. As with all of the products in the Lady Yum shop, the contents of these packages are carefully curated around the seasons/holidays, are beautifully arranged, and filled with inspiring stories of local businesses.

After quitting her corporate finance job, proprietor Megan Gordon initially took on the moniker Lady Yum in 2011 as a baker of high-end custom cakes and dessert packages. Gordon has since shifted focus to pour her heart and soul into perfecting her most popular product - the French macaron. The Lady Yum shop is designed to be an inviting, stimulating and comfortable place to not only get your macaron fix, but to meet a friend for a glass of wine, grab a genuinely special gift for a loved one or browse some of the best local food items available.

The store opening comes just over a month after the company completed a successful Kickstarter campaign raising over $37k in 30 days, $12k over Gordon’s initial goal. Seattle’s Marian Built provided the design and build of the space.

“It was hard to put myself and my work out there, but it ended up being such an inspiring and gratifying experience, with my heart melting over and over again throughout the 30 day campaign by everyone's generosity, excitement and true belief in Lady Yum,” Gordon said. “I am thrilled to be sharing both my macarons, but also to be supporting the local community through products I use both within the cookies, and on our shelves. The artisan food products featured on the store are delicious, attractively packaged, of the highest quality, and most importantly, have awesome personal stories attached to them. We will showcase them, share their stories, and help them create their following.”

Tasting Awards Methodology
Nominations for this year’s Washington Wine Awards were solicited from a panel of Washington wine and food professionals. More than 100 wines receiving the most votes in the award categories qualified for a blind tasting, which took place on March 3, 2014. The tasting was conducted by a panel of 20 industry professionals and the wines were scored using a 10- point system. The wine with the most points won. Winners for Wine of the Year (red and white) were wines nominated in that category that received the highest scores at the tasting. The 9th Annual WA Wine Awards were produced by Yashar Shayan.
