If I Won - Letting My Imagination Run Wild with Washington’s Lottery

I wanted to share an interesting project I’m working on with Washington’s Lottery, and invite you to join the fun. As you may know, every week Washingtonians have a shot at winning a ginormous jackpot and making their dreams a reality. Whether your dream is to buy a new home, fund a new business idea, or donate to a good cause — it’s fun to let our imaginations run free when we think about that “big win.”

Washington’s Lottery offers seven different draw games, plus Scratch to choose from, and Powerball and Mega Millions dole out the really big jackpots. For example, Friday's Mega Millions jackpot is $136 million.

$136 million! Let that number sink in.

You thought Richard Sherman’s new contract was big?!? It's more than twice as big!

The folks at Washington’s Lottery invited me to think about what I’d do #IfIWon this Mega Millions jackpot. I’m a bit of a voyeur when it comes to fabulous real estate, so I tried to put it in context of amazing, “go big” homes. To give you some perspective, the most expensive home in Washington just went on the market for $32.58 million. Win the Mega Millions jackpot and you can buy that home, with plenty of money left over for that dream yacht to dock out front and a voyage to all seven continents.

If I won the jackpot, I would buy my parents a home they have always wanted, then buy myself a dream home overlooking beautiful Lake Washington, and use a portion of it to try every Michelin star restaurant around the world.

But I want to hear from you. What would you do if you won Friday's $136 million jackpot?

Tweet or Instagram using the hashtag
#IfIWon, and let’s have some fun!

FROST
has been a favorite destination for doughnut aficionados since 2009.

The famous tagline, Doughnuts Evolved, describes the uniquely sophisticated, yet traditional doughnuts created by FROST’s owners, Del Hernandez, Daniel Sterling and Paul Goetz. This term can now been applied to its newly expanded location, where the popular doughnut shop has evolved into an upscale dessert lounge, complete with cupcakes, soft serve frozen custard, full service coffee bar with custom FROST roast and, of course, lots more doughnuts!

“As part of FROST's Signature Flavors, we've combined quality ingredients to create our artisan Gianduja and Mexican Vanilla frozen custard - served in a Cannoli cone, of course,” said Del Hernandez, managing partner/culinary director at FROST. “Our chef's exclusive French macarons and summery galettes will pair perfectly with local wines hand-selected by FROST, and skilled baristas at our full-service espresso station will craft lattes in traditional and lactose-free options. There's truly something for everyone!"

Doors open on Friday May 30th at 6:00 am at the new location, with double the space and a delicious gourmet dessert menu to enjoy, which includes 12 rotating cupcake flavors, such as Cherry Limeade, Lemon Meringue, Crème Brûlée, plus Gluten Free options such as German Chocolate Cake.

The Official Grand Re-Opening Celebration on Friday May 30th kicks off at 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm, with special guests and sparkling wine provided by Treveri Cellars. This event is open to the public. We’d love to see you there as well.

Here are some sweet opportunities for public to connect with FROST:

Have you ever sat back at the end of a long day sippin’ on a cold one and thought, “wow, this is nice, but I really wish I could be supporting international literacy with this beer?” Probably not. But on June 4th from 7 to 10pm, King’s Hardware, Lowercase Brewing and Fremont Brewing Company are making this frothy, philanthropic daydream a reality!

Kick back and enjoy a delicious pint (or a pitcher) from Lowercase or Fremont Brewing Company and feel good about your life choices knowing that all proceeds will benefit Room to Read: a totally-swell organization devoted to literacy and gender equality in education.

Beer not really your speed? A dollar from your King’s Lemonade will go to the same organization, so, no worries. Totally sober? No need to call your sponsor (unless they’re great at skeeball), because Room to Read is selling raffle tickets all night with some super sweet and totally-not-boozy prizes.

All donations from the evening will go to Room to Read's Local Language Publishing Program -- producing treasured books for kids in places like Nepal, Cambodia, Laos and South Africa. If we can raise $1,500, that’s 1500 books for kids that totally need them. Keep on drinking that beer and fighting the good fight!

FareStart Signs Lease at Pacific Tower

FareStart, the local non-profit organization that provides culinary job training to homeless and disadvantaged individuals, announced today that it has signed a lease with the Washington State Dept. of Commerce for space at the iconic Pacific Tower (also known as the Pacific Medical Tower), located atop Seattle’s Beacon Hill. The lease, which includes 10,000 square feet of space across the first and second floors, is part of FareStart’s new five year strategic growth plan aimed at more than doubling the number of individuals served through the organization’s job training programs. FareStart will officially occupy the new space Sep. 1.

“We’re thrilled to become a part of Pacific Tower’s new Innovation Center,” says FareStart CEO Megan Karch. “We’ll be able to significantly expand our training—a key focus of our strategic growth plan—in a location that will also bring together other organizations providing key support services to the community, including our students, such as medical and dental facilities and continuing education. It’s a dream scenario for us.”

FareStart’s new strategic plan includes growing its training programs by nearly 63 percent, from 320 people annually to 520; and increasing the number of graduates by almost 92 percent, from 167 annually in 2013 to 320 in 2018. To direct the growth to areas needed most, FareStart examined populations currently underserved by employment training and identified four areas of increased focus: women, youth, individuals coming out of corrections, and individuals who are housed but in poverty. FareStart will focus its growth for these populations within its current training offerings, the adult culinary program and its Barista Training & Education program for at-risk youth. FareStart will also focus on wage progression for adult and youth graduates, with increased high school diploma/GED completion and access to higher education, customer service training and advanced skills.

To support the planned increase in training and the new facilities at Pacific Tower, FareStart aims to grow its social enterprise businesses from $3.7 million to $7 million in annual sales over the next five years. FareStart’s businesses, including the FareStart Restaurant, provide hands-on training opportunities to students in the program while generating approximately half of the organization’s operating revenue (the rest comes from individual donations, foundational grants, and a small amount of government funding). FareStart is also focused on growing its childcare meals in the new space—along with increasing community meals at the 700 Virginia facility—from 650,000 total meals annually to 1 million. These are the low-cost, healthy meals provided to area homeless shelters and low-income day care centers, a cornerstone of the organization’s history and training program. Additionally, FareStart hopes to grow its meals program to include private schools, daycares and medical centers.

“The Pacific Tower plays such an important role in our five year strategic growth plan,” says Karch. “Our organization requires balanced growth between student training and our social enterprise businesses, which fund our mission. We cannot grow one area without balancing the other side of the equation. Not only will the Pacific Tower space allow us to more than double the number of students we’re serving, but it will also allow that growth to happen sustainably by expanding our social enterprise businesses, generating important funds for the mission and creating dynamic training opportunities for our students. It’s a win-win.”

FareStart’s 10,000 square feet of space at Pacific Tower will include kitchen space, retail space for a an espresso bar/café and a quick-service facility, and training and classroom space for both the adult and youth programs. FareStart will also have access to an expansive 8th floor event space as the venue’s exclusive caterer during evenings and weekends. The Pacific Tower facilities will operate in tandem with the organization’s current location at its 700 Virginia Street building, home to the organization’s well known restaurant space and host to its weekly Guest Chef Night dinner series.

Since 1992, FareStart has provided opportunities for nearly 7,000 people to transform their lives, while also serving over 6 million meals to disadvantaged men, women, and children throughout the Puget Sound. Every day, men and women transform their lives in FareStart’s adult program, which includes culinary training, job placement services, life-skills classes, counseling, and assistance with housing, food, clothing and other support services to assist FareStart students as they change their lives. In 2013, 90 percent of FareStart’s adult graduates secured employment within 90 days of graduation and three months later, 88 percent we’re still in their jobs.

In 2011, FareStart launched Catalyst Kitchens to take the FareStart model to a national scale—working with existing organizations across the country to help apply the lessons that FareStart and “Model Members” from within the network have learned over the past several decades. Since its launch in 2011, the Catalyst Kitchens member network has collectively provided training and job opportunities for more than 3,500 men, women and youth in three countries, provided more than 11 million nutritious meals for those in need, and generated over $30 million in social enterprise revenue—which has gone back into the organizations to help increase capacity and services.

“We have aggressive goals for the future,” says Karch. “The need for our services continues to rise, and we’re stepping up to meet that need. With our five-year strategic plan and new space at Pacific Tower, all the pieces are in place to do everything we can to end homelessness, poverty and hunger in our region.”

About FARESTART: FareStart provides a community that transforms lives by empowering homeless and disadvantaged men, women, and families to achieve self-sufficiency through life skills, job training and employment in the food service industry. Since 1992, FareStart has provided opportunities for nearly 7,000 people to transform their lives, while also serving over 6 million meals to disadvantaged men, women, and children. Every day, men and women transform their lives in the adult program, which includes culinary training, life-skills classes, counseling, and assistance with housing, food, clothing and other support services to assist FareStart students as they change their lives. FareStart’s Graduate Support Services program provides ongoing guidance to adult graduates, providing a full year (and sometimes longer) of support to help individuals move forward to self-sufficiency. FareStart, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, generates about half of its annual operating revenue through business operations, such as Guest Chef Night at the FareStart Restaurant. BELLEVUE, WASHINGTON— Russell Wilson and Jordan Hill are teammates on the football field, and now the two Seahawks players are also teaming up in the fight against diabetes.

The cause is something both players say is important to them: Wilson’s father passed away from complications of the illness and Hill’s father has diabetes.

Wilson will serve as a national ambassador and Hill will serve as a team member for CR3.

You can help in the cause too. Now through the end of the month, Santouka is partnering with Table for Two, an international non-profit; For every bowl of ramen sold, $0.25 will be donated to provide a school meal to a child in need.

Parlor Live Comedy Club Expands to Seattle

0

SEATTLE—Building on the success of Parlor Billiards and Spirits in Bellevue, principal Steven Olson is tailoring his entertainment concept to the forthcoming Parlor Live Seattle, a comedy club, private events venue and full-service, two-level lounge and dining room located at 1522 Sixth Avenue (between Pike and Pine Streets).

“We recognized Seattle was an untapped market with its own unique entertainment needs,” said Boone Helm, Marketing Director,Parlor Bellevue and Parlor Live Seattle. “Because only one in about five of our Bellevue location guests are from Seattle, and based on requests over the years from our guests, we began to consider how we could fit the needs of the growing downtown Seattle core.”

Last year, Olson and his team secured an ideal location (home to the former Fox Sports Grill) with great foot traffic that would lock in this two-block corridor as a foremost entertainment district. With the Parlor Live Seattle, guests could realize a full night out with comedy acts, dining and cocktails complemented by neighboring cinema, live theater and amusement options. The addition ofParlor Live Seattle enhances both the variety and frequency of live entertainment downtown, with at least one show per night and two nightly headliners on the weekends (Thursday-Saturday) evenings. It will also serve lunch, happy hour and dinner at its visually captivating street-level lounge seating 50, the Escape Lounge, as well as its lower level dining room and bar seating more than 208. Dinner and show packages make it a one-stop feature.

Unlike its eight-year-old Bellevue location, Parlor Live Seattle will focus primarily on its comedy club and events. Already, the ParlorLive has made a name as an A-list comedy club, with national headlining comedian appearances (Kevin Hart, Rob Schneider, Loni Love, Carlos Mencia and Ralphie May). Parlor Live Seattle will host more urban and alternative comics from Joe Rogan to Brian Posehn. The space will accommodate up to 400 people (vs. 270 in Bellevue) featuring edgy, top-billing comedians and drawing upon urban residents, local businesses, and nearby visitor and convention traffic.

Private events will be another big draw; wired with A/V and state-of-the-art sound, three private (or semi-private) event spaces accommodate groups of 50 to 400. Although billiards will not be a focus like Bellevue, the Parlor Live Seattle features six regulation billiards tables (and two more in its private event room). Look for customizable wall projections on the street-level Escape Lounge, a waterfall behind the back bar, and videos depicting water splashes, aquarium-like scenes and comedy club rosters. The lower level lounge features Spintouch technology at the bar, in which surface movements generate dynamic light and color reactions, making it interactive and engaging for guests.

The Seattle location will offer crave-able classics under $20. Look for a huge offering of appetizers, craft sliders, hand-tossed 14” artisan pizzas, small plates ideal for sharing, side dishes to compliment the entrée section of the menu, and combination party platters. Approachable steakhouse-inspired entrees will also highlight the menu, with such items as grilled tenderloin salad, seared ahi tuna, steak frites with bernaise sauce, wild halibut bites and braised short ribs. The full bar brings libations such as Parlor-Tini’s, Classics and Twists, wines and bubbles by the glass or bottle, and more than 10 beers on draft as well as bottled standards.

Those familiar with the space will find a fully updated design with a modern mix of cherry wood tables, rich-toned carpet and upholstery, textured walls, and vivid geometric print accents from Sue Genty Interior Design. Genty’s designs enhance the lighting and projection technologies throughout the spaces.

5th Annual All White Party is Back in Seattle [Tickets]

Join thousands of Seattle's hippest socialites for its 5th Annual All White Party! Created by Jeff Otis and Bryan Otis of Matthews Winery in Woodinville, the event was held for the first three years at the winery. But due to space constraints, parking, curfew, and crazy growth, the Otis brothers combined efforts with Brenton Webster and moved the party in year 4 to the Seattle Waterfront. As a result, over 3000 people partied on the pier last year, celebrating summer in Seattle. And let's face it, nothing beats a sunset over the Puget Sound!

There are two rules for this magical night, 1) wear all white 2) be awesome.

Date: Friday, August 22
Time: 7:00pm - 12:00am
Location: Pier 66 - Seattle Waterfront (2211 Alaskan Way Seattle, WA 98121)

BUY TICKETS
Buy your tickets at $25 before they go up in price.

Pier 66 boasts a huge outdoor waterfront area perfect for a late summer event. We have DJ Darin Hanson returning this year to provide musical entertainment, so hope you like dancing! We've asked him to play primarily top 40 music, so there will be plenty of opportunities to sing along. Plus, we believe every party should have a group sing along to Journey's "Don't Stop Believing." :)

Multiple food trucks will be on site providing plenty of food options, so arrive hungry! We'll realize the full list of food vendors before the party.

Parking is available via a six-story parking garage directly across the street from Pier 66. Two skybridges access the venue from the parking garage. There should be plenty of space for everyone again this year!

Lastly, as always, must be 21 to attend.

DRESS CODE

All white means you must wear all white. As an example, most ladies will be in all white dresses, most guys in white pants and a white shirt.

The only exception to this rule are your accessories, for example belts, shoes and handbags are excluded from the all white rule.

The dress code will be strictly enforced by our staff at the door. If you turn up wearing any other color than white (this includes but is not limited to kakis, blue jeans, stone wash jeans, black, grey, cream, tan or ANY other color that is not white) you will be denied entry, and there will be no refunds if you break this rule.

It's really easy. All white means all white. Please plan accordingly.

IMPROVEMENTS FROM LAST YEAR

We've made a few changes and improvements from last year:

* More than double the check-in stations - processing a line of 3000 people took us longer than expected last year. This year we've more than doubled the number of check-in stations and added a bunch of extra security and staff. There will be a lot of people, so if you arrive at peak time, expect there will be a line to get in. We'll do everything we can to ensure the wait time is reasonable and the line moves as quickly as possible.

* No more red wine - we heard your feedback, and there will be no more red wine at this year's event.

* Additional bathrooms - the bathroom line wasn't too crazy last year, but this year we've more than doubled the number of additional bathrooms that we're bringing in.

* Additional cash machines - the venue will have additional ATMs to ensure they don't run dry. Please remember to bring cash ahead of time.

* Alcohol options - We're still finalizing the list of drink options, but it will likely include white wine, a sparkling wine, vodka (with mixers), and beer. It will NOT include a full bar...so arrive with realistic expectations of what drink options will be provided. We will no longer serve red wine at this event, due to how many stains that option has created over the past four years. Sorry that it took us so long to figure that one out!

CHARITY

This year we're excited to support the Ben Towne Foundation (http://bentownefoundation.org/) in their mission to accelerate the pace of pediatric cancer research...until a cure is found. 100% of any amount you donate (donation tab is provided on the ticket page) will go directly to childhood cancer research, and one day, finding a cure. Thanks for your generous support!

TICKET FAQ

Q: Help! I can’t find my email confirmation or my tickets, what do I do?

A: No worries. You can re-download your ticket from Shindigg: http://support.shindigg.com/customer/portal/articles/810125-how-do-i-download-my-tickets-

Q: Help! I never received my email confirmation, what do I do?

A: As soon as you purchased tickets, we sent you an email confirmation. Sometimes it ends up in your junk mail folder. Be sure to check your junk mail folder, and if you use Gmail, be sure to check your other “tabs”. Gmail recently introduced a tab system and it automatically puts mail into different tabs for you, so your confirmation mail might be in a different tab. If so, move it to the “primary” tab so future confirmation email show up there.

Add support@shindigg.com to your address book or safe list to ensure that future confirmation emails end up in your inbox.
The most important thing attached to the confirmation email was your tickets. You can access them on Shindigg and re-download them at any time: http://support.shindigg.com/customer/portal/articles/810125-how-do-i-download-my-tickets-

Q: Can I change the name on my tickets or re-assign them to someone else?

A: Yes, you can easily edit your tickets up to 2 hours before the event and re-download the new PDFs: http://support.shindigg.com/customer/portal/articles/416724-editing-ticket-holder-information

Q: Do I need to bring a printed ticket to the venue?

A: To help speed up your check-in process, yes, we recommend that you bring your printed ticket. All tickets are electronic, so long as the name on your government issued ID matches the name you put on your ticket then we can look you up in the system.

Q: Help! I forgot to print out my ticket and I’m already on the way to the venue, will I be able to get in?

A: Yes, as long as your name on your government issued ID matches the name on the ticket, you’ll be fine, we can look you up in the system.

GENERAL FAQ

Q: Is this the same as previous years?

A: This is the same All White Party you come to know and love, but like every year, we've made some improvements. If you like prior years, we think you’re going to love this year.

Q: What happens if it’s raining?

A: That never happens in Seattle :) But just in case it does, we’ve plenty of room for everyone indoors and the party will still be awesome.

Q: Do I have to dress in all white?

A: Yes. If you’re not dressed appropriately, you will be denied entry. Plan ahead and get your ensemble together early. Note that most department stores in Seattle will be sold out of white clothes in the days before the event.

Vessyl Automatically Knows What You're Drinking in Real-Time

What if you could pour any liquid into a cup and it told you everything you needed to know about it. Well today, cofounder Justin Lee and Jawbone designer Yves Behar have come up with a smart cup that does just that. Vessyl, a 13-ounce cup recognizes any beverage you pour into it, displaying its nutritional content, and syncs all your drinking habits to your smartphone.

The smart cup is great for those looking to improve their health.

Vessyl lets you choose different "lenses" that you specifically want to track, like caffeine, calories, sugar, fat, protein, and sodium. Vessyl also estimates, tracks, and displays your real-time hydration needs. Your "Pryme," which is the company's proprietary metric of your hydration needs, is displayed on the cup itself. You simply tilt the cup to activate the display. That blue light at the top means you're fully hydrated. Throughout the day, that line will fluctuate.
"Consumption is as important or more important as what we track through exercise," says Lee, "so we developed a sensor that could instantly analyze the nutritional content of what’s inside a beverage … on a molecular level." Lee won’t say exactly how the sensor works. He likens it to the kind of sensor you’d find in a bottling factory that analyzes batches of liquid (or other foods) to make sure each batch is consistent. "It’s the kind of sensor you’d use for quality control," Lee says, "and the sensor doesn’t degrade. It’s non-contact."

See the cup in action below, and for those early backers you can get your hand on a Vessyl for $99, retail for $199.

Priceline Group to Acquire Online Restaurant Reservations Leader, OpenTable for $2.6 Billion

Priceline is getting into the restaurant reservations space with the announcement it intends to acquire OpenTable. Pictured is the Zentan Restaurant in a Kimpton Hotel in Washington, D.C. / Kimpton Hotels

OpenTable just booked a whale today which resulted in an astonishing $2.6 billion transaction by the Priceline Group giving them a stronger foothold in mobile and further enhancing their digital booking experience for their customers and world-class marketing solutions for their partners. OpenTable will join Priceline's successful group of companies including: Booking.com, Kayak, Priceline.com, Agoda and Rentalcars.com.

Looking at the numbers:
  • OpenTable, the restaurant reservations platform attracts some 15 million restaurant reservations monthly with over 620 million diners, according to its website.
  • The Wall Street Journal reported that the Priceline Group agreed to offer OpenTable $103 per share in an all-cash deal, and that would be a 46% premium over its closing share price June 12.
  • The deal, which is expected to close in the third quarter, is larger than the Priceline Group’s 2013 acquisition of Kayak for $2.1 billion.

The Priceline Group is now positioned very well to compete against companies in the restaurant arena such as Yelp, GrubHub, and Groupon which resulted in a nice little pop in stock price after the announcement of the acquisition.

Fast food giant Jack in the Box is now testing a new concept that we have all heard of, the New York "Cronut" or should we say "Croissant donuts." Jack in the Box plans to bring the highly praised dessert treat to the masses without having to fly to New York and wait in lines of 2 hours or more. Oh and there is no limit here on how many you can get. The first location to bring the sugary goodness is in Ramona, California as the news first broke out earlier today on Reddit.

So, who wants one or three? The Croissant Donuts are available at $0.89 for one piece or $1.99 for three pieces.
